Our house is full of books. I have books, Jeff has books, and the kids have tons
of books. We get them from goodwill for $0.30-$0.50. We try to get the kids
excited about reading. We read to them, we have them read to us, and we have
them read to each other every single day, multiple times a day.
One day, while trying to help one of the kids with her reading and writing, I
realized despite all the reading we do in this house, that she had a very
difficult time coming up with any ideas herself.....so I had an idea....and now
we call it: Creative Story Time.
Creative Story time is when we all sit down before bed, get all cozy with a warm blanket, and one person starts to tell a story. After a little while, that person points to another person who
then continues the story. This goes on for a while, until everyone has had a
few turns and it's mine or Jeff's turn and we decided to end the story.
In order to do this, the kids have to come up with something on their
own, listen to the others who are talking, and process what is being said. We
have seen a huge improvement in all the kiddos since we started doing creative
story time; and the kids absolutely love it. They beg for it every night! Our 2
yr old boy is excellent at it, believe or not. He sometimes comes up with some
of the craziest funniest stuff! Every time we have had a new sibling group
join us, they love creative story time too!
