Science Saturdays
In this experiment, we took our mason jars, put water in them, and then put food coloring in two of the jars. We then wet 2 paper towels, and waited. Our oldest's hypothesis was correct, in that the colors would travel along the towel and join up in the center jar and create a green water. I think our 5 yr old's hypothesis was that it would blow up. LOL. The one below was a simpler version where the green water traveled across the paper towel to the other jar. These took a day or two to finish. Each day the kids eagerly ran over to the counter to see if there were any changes.
Our oldest loves science, and to encourage that, I started finding or making up fun science experiments to do with the kids. I have called it science Saturdays (merely because that is usually the day we have time to do it!) A few of them are quick and easy, and some have been several days long. Recently, I have started having the kids tell me their hypothesis before the science experiment (yes, even the 3 year has his own hypothesis!).....
Another experiment consisted of putting 2 mason jars on the counter. One was filled with water, the other filled with vinegar.....We then put an egg in each jar. Over the next 4 or 5 days, I would have the kids look at the jars and see if they could see anything changing. After about 5 days, we took the eggs out and examined them. I let the our oldest take the vinegar egg (which now was swollen, and soft shelled), and take it out to the porch. We then told her to drop the egg gently at a low height. To her (and the little kids') surprise, it bounced! We then had her drop it from a bit higher. She was expecting it to bounce again, but it splattered all over! This got quite a few laughs out of everyone!
We've done plenty of other experiments.....some of which I'll post about when I have time! If anyone has other fun ideas to do with the kids, let me know! We always love a fun experiment =)
Ooobleck
Our 2nd grader's class made this at school, and it was easy and fun. It makes a gooey substance that is firm in the bowl and runs into liquid when they pick it up. We used food coloring to make it more interesting.
Ingredients:
water
corn starch
food coloring (optional)
Directions:
Pile cornstarch in center of bowl. Pour small amount of water in, until it becomes gooey. Add food coloring. Stir it up and enjoy!
